Martin G. Silverman, 92, passed away Monday, December 22, 2014 at Finger Lakes Center For Living.
Born in the Bronx, on April 21, 1922 ,
he was son of the late Frank and Minnie Shapiro Silverman.
He moved to Auburn with his family in 1935.
He was a graduate of Auburn East High School and Hobart College, where he played freshman lacrosse, was elected to the Orange Key Junior Honor Society and was , a member of Phi Phi Delta Fraternity.
He was well known and respected in Auburn as the owner of Martin's Jeweler's since 1947 where he stood by the slogan, "If you don't know diamonds, know your jeweler".
He loved his business and in 1972 became a Diamond Master of America.
He was also a jewelry appraiser for the former National Bank.
Martin was a member of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce and on the Board of Directors from 1971 to 1973 and active in many civic organizations.
He was a life long member of Congregation B'nai Isreal.
He loved to play golf and was a member of both Auburn and Owasco Country Clubs for many years.
Martin loved his family above all else.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis Liberman Silverman, with whom he had a romance for 68 years.
He is also survived by daughters Susan Silverman of Auburn, Ruth (Ronald) Siegle of Columbus, OH; grandchildren Adam (Jessica) Hitchcock of Dunmore, PA,
Max (Emily) Hitchcock of Aurora, Gabriel Siegle of Washington, DC , Hannah Siegle of Columbus, OH, great grand daughters Rachel and Zoe Hitchcock and by his pug Jake.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, December 23 from 5-7pm at Langham Funeral Home, 75 E. Genesee St.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30AM at the funeral home followed by burial in Fort Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make contributions to the Matthew House or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in memory of Martin.
