It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Lee Detsel, 69, on April 10, 2026 at University Hospital, Syracuse, NY. Born in Auburn, NY he was the son of the late Howard Albert and Lillian (Stewart) Detsel and lived his life with passion, energy, and an open heart.
Larry was a true enthusiast of speed and horsepower, with a lifelong love of drag racing. Nothing brought him more joy than being behind the wheel of a favorite 1956 turquoise Chevrolet with a white top, a car that perfectly matched his vibrant spirit. A devoted fan of NASCAR, he especially admired Dale Earnhardt, embracing the thrill and excitement of the race just as he did in his own life.
He was a man who never slowed down, always on the move and happiest when keeping busy. Whether four-wheeling through rugged trails, hunting in the quiet of the woods, bowling with friends, or camping under the open sky, he found joy in every adventure. He had a deep appreciation for nature and could often be found watching the deer in his backyard, taking in the simple beauty of the world around him.
Above all, he cherished his family and was a loving and devoted presence in their lives. Known for his generous spirit, he had one of the biggest hearts—always giving of himself and opening his arms to anyone in need.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sandra (Mack) Detsel; two daughters, Tina (Steven) Large and Michelle (Mike) Baker; two sons, David Walter and Russell (Heather) Kreydatus; a sister, Katherine (Tom) Gauthier; a brother, Howard Detsel; 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a niece Melissa Detsel.
There are no calling hours or services at this time. A celebration of Life will be held on his 70th birthday with family and friends. Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Please visit www.Langhamfuneralhomellc.com
He will be remembered for his boundless energy, his love of life in the fast lane, and the kindness he showed to all who knew him.
